When I wrap up the writing contest, I'm going to have an art contest. I need help setting the parameters. Do we have artists among us that can draw a scene from New Britannia? A landscape? Inside the Fire Lotus Tavern on a busy night? A battle in the Spectral Mines? A battle with an existing monster, or perhaps a new creature? An avatar interacting with one of the regular townfolk? If the prizes were $25 or $50, would there be participation?
I have no artistic talent in that area... but I'm sure others would be up for it. Also, I'd love to see what people come up with (I may have no talent, but I can appreciate the talent of others).
You should see what I'd do for $1.50. Sounds good though. Hopefully, entries will be good enough to be considered for crowd sourced in-game paintings.
I am not sure how I would be able to tell if submitted work was original, if I didn't also make a requirement that the setting be obviously in New Britannia. The art would have to include scenery, or objects, or clothing that are things we know exist in the world. I might have to develop a point scale where fewer points are given from a setting that is clearly not New Britannia, more points if the setting might be New Britannia, and the most points for references that clearly set the work in New Britannia.
I would take part in an art competition. I hope to take part in future writing ones as well actually, I was just busy writing something else when that competition started. However I would make time for some artistry of the drawing variety.
So now we turn our attention more fully toward this. What would be a meaningful prize? I know it takes an awful lot of time to create artwork on the level of official concept art. I would want to reward that level of effort appropriately. I can't say that Portalarium will do anything with the submissions. I'm sure they'll look at them. I don't want to limit what people create, but I would want entries to be clearly tied to New Britannia. If any artists don't wish to make any public statements, please PM me and tell me what it would take to make participation worthwhile. Thank you for your time.
