Welcome to the game @Muggsy. There is a lot to learn and do in this game. Any questions ask away here and also the game has Universe Chat. It is /U in game. Have a great time and don't forget to do quests for your free land deed.

Is everyone experiencing random spikes of lag that can last from a few seconds to almost 45 seconds? I even get this when in my private encounters.

I have definitely noticed that it is nothing close to UO. That said, it is pretty cool that you can max more than just 7 skills. I find it weird that you can take a skill over 100, I just hit 105 on sword and I'm not sure if it's worth the points or should I be focusing on something else.

    That's definitely plenty.

A 45 second hitch is pretty extreme. However, when a scene loads there can bee some pretty big pauses (asset loading, shader compilation, other stuff). Hopefully some of that gets alleviated with the new Unity update.

The game has a cap of 200 on skills. Skills after 100 go up with exponentially higher and higher xp required to train them to 200, so that will probably never happen.

I guess if you're expecting UO then SotA won't satisfy. I personally feel that SotA has a lot more to it than UO ever did. The problem is that people expected UO, trashed SotA for not being UO and now we have no population.

That's for sure! In Ultima Online free to play (Ultima Online™: Endless Journey) you can't own any property or own any vendor, unless you have a Subscription. In Shroud of the Avatar, they give you 2 free deeds that allows you to claim a lot in any POT or PRT town. You can then also place a vendor on the lot and sell your wares! This is all completely free. No Subscription required.

Wow good job on getting your swords to 105 already. Well the interesting thing imo is that just swords/blades alone could seem weak alone. It's what you add to it like how much strength/ dex you have. Have you specialized in blades, what buffs do you put on etc. Buffs are very important in this game. Never leave home without them. Jump in two devotional waters, eat two different foods, and many other buffs can be obtained. So buff up with all those things and skills you can cast to make you stronger. Imo it's a very interesting system with lots to enhance your characters abilities. Maybe you know some of this but just in case. Oh and blades specialization and armor and accessories make a difference. I am a bludgeon specialization and life specialization for paladin type.

I have never understood this statement. I don't know exactly what players are expecting out of SOTA. What makes UO so much better? What is SOTA missing?

I see a lot of similarities between UO and SOTA:
    • They both use the same training/not-training skill system.
    • They both allow you to just be a crafter from the start. (A lot of MMORPGs limit your crafting levels based on your overall level. So you have to kill monsters to level up, so you can than level up your skills.)
    • They both allow you to create a seemingly endless variations on a huge catalog of craftable items.
    • They both have a focus on crafting and a player run economy.
    • They both have a bounty system to control player grieving.
    • They both have the same "die and resurrect at an Ankh" mechanic.
    • They both have crafted items just piled on top of each other in most housing lots. Players will create one of every item and just toss it in the yard.
These are the neutral differences I see:
    • Mining is limited to nodes. In UO you could strike on any hill tile or stone.
    • You don't have buildings outside of towns. In UO, you could find these entire estates way out in the wilderness.
    • SOTA doesn't have the class "backpack" inventory interface.
These are the positive differences I see:
    • Combat decks provide a much more active, dynamic combat experience.
    • 3D
These are the negative differences I see:
    • SOTA doesn't really have cohesive, coherent story.
    • SOTA doesn't have a good quest tracker.

Used to. But people didn't use it much, and there were other issues with it I don't exactly recall. Making icons for items I think was one, which slowed down the ability to get things into the game.

I saw the response of 64GB RAM which is certainly plenty as Barugon said, What is the GPU you are using? The hitching is mainly tied to garbage collection, but if you're Graphics Card is not dedicated or has enough resources, you can end up seeing the same kind of behavior.

Most "lag" is actually hitching caused by loading assets, compiling shaders, garbage collection, etc.
